What does Retour do and when should I use it?
Retour is the redirect management tool built into your CMS. It allows you to create and manage URL redirects- rules that automatically send visitors from one URL to another- and to track which pages on your site are returning 404 errors.
When you need a redirect
Redirects are needed any time a URL that was previously working changes or is removed. Common situations include:
Changing the slug of a published page
Restructuring a section of your site so that URLs change
Removing a page entirely and wanting to send visitors to a relevant alternative
Migrating content from an old site to a new one with different URL patterns
Why redirects matter
Without a redirect in place, anyone visiting the old URL- whether from a search engine result, a saved bookmark, an external link, or another page on your own site- will receive a 404 page not found error. This is a poor experience for visitors and can affect your site's search engine rankings over time, as search engines may demote or eventually drop pages that consistently return errors.
What Retour also does
As well as managing redirects you create manually, Retour monitors all 404 errors that occur on your site. The dashboard shows you which URLs are generating errors, how often they are being hit, and where visitors were referred from. This makes it straightforward to identify broken links and address them.
