What happens when there are no ads available for a page?

The site uses a three-step fallback process to fill ad placements. This ensures that placements are populated with relevant content wherever possible, and that empty ad zones are avoided even when targeted inventory is limited.

Step one: page-targeted ads
The first preference is for ads that have been specifically related to the current page. If targeted ads exist for the page being viewed, they are shown first. Up to three targeted ads can fill the placement.

Step two: site-wide random ads
If fewer than three targeted ads are available for the page, the remaining slots are filled with randomly selected ads from the general inventory- ads that are valid, enabled, and not already showing in the same placement. This ensures the placement is always fully populated even when targeted inventory is thin.

Step three: any available ads
If there is still not enough inventory from either of the above sources, the system draws from any remaining available ads in the pool to fill the outstanding slots.

When no ads are available at all
If there are no valid, enabled ads in the system at all- for example, if all ads have expired or been disabled- the ad placement will not display on the page. No empty box or placeholder is shown.
